Government took steps and the board was formed in the year 1989 that was named as board of intermediate and secondary education DG khan. This board was formed to provide students with all facilities and quality education this board was formed and based by the hard work of Lt. General (Rtd) Khalid Maqbool on 12 March 2002 he was Government of Punjab, this board was not having office at first but then it was formed at Mustafa Chowk, Multan Road Dera Ghazi Khan.

This board has main purpose that is for conducting examination for 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th class examination and there are many areas those come under the board and under its jurisdiction talking about them those are Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Layah and Rajanpur. Punjab education commission that was formed in the year 2005 it is also with the board to conduct and manage the examination those are conducted for 5th and 8th class as these examination are not compulsory but students appear in them for practice.

There are many schools and colleges those are private and regular these are affiliated with the board and running under its rules and regulations. For the board there must be registration done and students will be provided with roll number slips and date sheets after that. Examination by the board for matric that consist of two parts part I and part II that is 9th and 10th class in the month of march and April and many students appear in them as result will be declared in the month of June and July many students wait for them and they are really excited for it.
